ViaBTC is a cryptocurrency mining pool founded in May 2016 by Haipo Yang. The pool supports mining for 21 cryptocurrencies. As of 2025, it ranks among the top three mining pools by hashrate for Bitcoin.[1][2]
History
ViaBTC was established in May 2016 by Haipo Yang, a former developer at Tencent and Futu. The mining pool launched in June 2016 with its own proprietary software developed by Yang.[3]
In August 2016, ViaBTC introduced the PPS+ (Pay Per Share Plus) reward model, becoming the first major pool to share transaction fees with miners. This innovation was later adopted by other mining pools.[4][5]
In 2017, amid the Bitcoin scaling debate, ViaBTC mined the inaugural Bitcoin Cash block (block height 478559), marking the coin's official launch.[6] In a subsequent interview, Yang Haipo stated that, as a company, ViaBTC has maintained a neutral stance toward BCH and that miners are free to choose whether to mine BTC or BCH; as a mining pool, the company's role is to provide the corresponding services to meet miners' demands.
In September 2023, Coinbase reported that ViaBTC controlled over 51% of the Zcash network's hash rate, raising concerns about potential 51% attacks. ViaBTC stated it had "neither the motivation nor the ability" to launch such attacks.[7]
On April 19, 2024, ViaBTC mined Bitcoin block 840,000, marking the fourth Bitcoin halving. The block contained what Ordinals protocol enthusiasts call the "Epic Satoshi," which was later auctioned for 33.3 BTC (approximately $2.13 million).[8][9][10]
